Miss SVG/Miss Carival 2003
After the advertisment for Miss SVG my friends and family encouraged me to enter because they thought I was a natural dramatist. My love for the stage and passion for life definitely played a role in gaining the crowns (Miss SVG and Miss Carival 2003). I was also well prepared and relaxed. I just approached it as I do life - ready to confidently take on any challenge that comes my way.
The Miss Universe experience
After these two victories, I began the rigorous preparation for the Miss Universe pageant which I entered in 2006. I had to stretch a bit more, working out more at the gym, working with my chaperones and the organizing committee in coordinating my wardrobe and other training sessions that was needed. This was extremely demanding, but I was always ready to rise to the occasion.
Over the years I have grown to admire two outstanding women in pageantry; they are the first black Miss Universe - Janelle 'Penny' Commissiong and Wendy FitzWilliam, both from Trinidad and Tobago. I think they are great role models for women in the caribbean, since they possess grace, beauty and intelligence and have a zest for life that personal tragedies have not been able to diminish. They have continued to live very successful lives after their involvement in pageantry.
Rising above the negative
In the pageant world, there would be many critics, especially as it relates to the swimsuit segment. However, it is my view that how much skin a woman shows has very little to do with whether she is respected or not. A woman should be seen as much more than a function of beauty. She should be respected for the quality of her intellect, which does not depend on whether she is beauty queen in a bikini or a CEO of a Fortune 500 company in a business suit.
Winning a beauty pageant can never be as important as understanding the huge responsibilities that go along with it. During my reign as Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadines, I have attended many official functions and also visited the House of Hope, an organization for persons with HIV/AIS, to speak with participants about their everyday struggle with the disease and to bring awareness to the wider society. Additionally, I also took time to visit the pediatric ward of the pediatric ward of the local hospital simply reading to and spending time with children.
The Definition of Beauty
In my opinion, beauty is more about the way a person feels about herself or himself that wat they look like on the outside. I have noticed that there are poople who are not traditionally beautifyl but their personality outshines everything else and they appear to have a natural glow and that people always want to be around them. To me this kind of person is truly beautiful.
Words of Wisdom
My personal view is that one should live life on their own terms an never let this life live this life for you. always be true to yourself and your heart.
