Miss SVG 2006 - Sheridan Lewis
Ever since I was a child I always had a dream of wearing a crown, just like the queens of yester-year, this dream was realized when I captured the Miss SVG 2006 title. However prior to this life changing experience I must say that I received quite a bashing for entering the pageant, since many thought that my christian values were being compromised. However, I took it all in strides, and realized that this would have been a wonderful opportunity to influence positive change in my country, by creating a sense of awareness about threats to society and forging ahead with God's guidance in showcasing the determination and conviction to empower other young persons.
The experience however was one that I will always cherish for the rest of my life, as I was able to form friendships, and become a mentor. In the beginning I was taken aback by the attention I received as the title holder of 2006, but realized that this was not to be taken slightly and it meant that I had a tremendous responsibility to the society. I was motivated to go back to my Alma Matta, the Sion Hill Government School to be a source of inspiration to the children there. Glady, they were thrilled at the gesture, and this spured me to continue giving motivational talks even on an informal level. I honestly felt a sense of purpose by encouraging others.
A Voice for the People
My achievement has afforded me the opportunity to study at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus Jamaica, where I am pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Media and Communication, specializing in Multi-Media. My love for people has given me a deep convinction, that as human beings our voices should be heard, and it is therefore my view that the media serves this function.
Today, if asked to do it all over again, I would gladly fill out that form once again, take out my best photos for the submission process and start the process once more because pageantry has made me a better person. It has given me enormous strength, boldness, confidence and poise. I will not crumble under pressure because I have learnt that trials only build our spirits to achieve great and mighty things in life.
Come Alive
Pageantry has taught me that is it easy for someone to have a dream, but it takes an enormous drive and ambition to go the extra mile, in attaining one's goals. While you are young be productive, be all you can be (II Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou and example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit and in purity)
Be Fearless
Finally my advice to anyone who wishes to participate in pageants. Be fearless, fight for what you believe in at all times. Never loose sight of your target and be willing to make sacrifices. Remember that beauty goes way beyond the surface; Let the mind and heart share your beauty to others. Love yourself so that you can have love for others.
